Process Shutdown System (PSD)

Purpose: The PSD system is designed to protect equipment and prevent escalation of process upsets.

It acts before the ESD and is generally less severe, allowing for safe handling of abnormal process conditions..

Key Features:

• Triggered by process parameters exceeding safe limits (pressure, temperature, flow, level)..

• Automatically shuts down affected process sections to prevent equipment damage..

• More frequent than ESD, but not life-threatening conditions.

• Often integrated with Distributed Control System (DCS) or Safety Instrumented System (SIS).

Key Features:

• Often integrated with Distributed Control System (DCS) or Safety Instrumented System (SIS).

Typical Actions:

• Isolate specific parts of the process.

• Shut down pumps or compressors.

• Close control or isolation valves.

• Prevent flow to/from vessels at risk.

Triggers include:

  • Fire or gas detection.).
  • Manual ESD activation.
  • Loss of power or control systems

Integration with Other Systems

Both ESD and PSD are part of the broader Safety Instrumented System (SIS), which includes:

  • Fire & Gas Detection System.
  • Alarm Management.
  • Blowdown System
  • • Control System (DCS/PLC).
  • Emergency Power Systems
